Atlanta Area Archers Take Home the Gold at Regional Tournament

 

Conyers, Georgia, July 1, 2002.  Young Archers from across the Southeast competed in the Southeastern JOAD (Junior Olympic Archery Development) Championship Tournament that was held June 29 and 30 in Conyers, Georgia. JOAD is the Youth program sponsored by the National Archery Association, which is the governing body of the Olympic Sport of Archery. 

 

The JOAD Southeastern Tournament attracted archers from Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Georgia.  Atlanta area archers took 9 gold medals, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze.  The two-day tournament was shot under Federation Internationale de Tir a l'Arc  rules and consisted of shooting 36 arrows at four distances, totaling 144 arrows for a possible total score of 1440 points.

 

Atlanta Area Medallists:

 

ALPHARETTA

 

Victoria Sales of Alpharetta won the Gold in the Female Recurve Bowman Division with a score of 1095.  Victoria’s distances were 30, 25, 20 and 10 meters. 

 

CONYERS

 

Kent Rivers of Conyers won the Gold in the Male FITA Cadet  Recurve Division with a score of 896.  The Archer Recreational Division is a non-competitive division for archers ages 14-18 and they shoot 60, 50, 40 and 30-meter distances.

 

FAYETTEVILLE

 

Joey Smallwood of Fayetteville won the Gold in the Male Recurve Bowman Division with a score of 1208 – the highest score of the tournament. 

 

Emily Barley of Fayetteville won the Bronze in the Female Recurve Bowman Division with a score of 475. 

 

Will Harrison of Fayetteville won the Gold in the Male Yeoman Recurve Division with a score of 600. 

 

JONESBORO

 

Katie Kissme of Jonesboro won the Gold in the Female Compound Archer Division with a score of 1060. 

 

Maggie Smith of Jonesboro won the Gold in the Female Cub Recurve Division with a score of 1174. 

 

Dekembe Donaldson of Jonesboro won the Silver in the Male Recurve Bowman Division with a score of 1055.

 

Matt James of Jonesboro won the Bronze in the Male Recurve Bowman Division with a score of 640. 

 

MACON

 

Mike Treece of Macon won the Gold Medal in the Male Junior FITA Recurve Division with a score of 1039.  The Male Junior Recurve Division is for men ages 16-18.  Mike shot 4 distances:  90, 70, 50 and 30 meters.

 

SNELLVILLE

 

Kelly Hart of Snellville won the Silver in the Female Recurve Bowman Division with a score of 788. 

 

STOCKBRIDGE

 

Sarena Sony of Stockbridge won the Gold in the Female Junior FITA Recurve Division with a score of 1132.  FITA Cadet Recurve division is for girls’ ages 14-16 and the division shoots 70, 60, 50 and 30 meters.

 

Michael Bell of Stockbridge won the Gold in the Male Cub Recurve Division with a score of 1112.  Michael shot distances of 50, 40 and 30 meters.

Ages:  Through the year of the 8th birthday

Distances:  M/F  30, 25, 20 and 10 meters

Ages:  8 – 12; Through the year of the 12th birthday

 

Cadet

Ages: 14 – 16; through the year of the 16th birthday

Distances:  M/F  50, 40, 30 and 20 meters

Ages:  12 – 14; through the year of the 14th birthday
