World University Championships-Madrid, Spain

GUY KRUEGER
This past July, Greg Krueger and Chris Shull, and I had the opportunity to represent the United States at the World University Championships in Madrid, Spain. This was my first international competition so I was very excited to finally get some experience against an international field of competitors and also to travel to a place half way around the world! Not only did this lead to the most exciting trip of my life but also my greatest accomplishment, becoming the World University Champion!
We arrived in Spain two days early to get accustomed to the time difference and also the food and culture. In Spain, they eat much later than most Americans do; lunch is at 2:30 p.m. while dinner is at 9:30 p.m.. Due to the lack of MEAT in our first few meals at the university, we found ourselves seeking out the nearest McDonalds and Burger Kings in the area. Chris even lost five pounds there because he could not get his usual consumption of food!
Most of our day was spent at the competition field, but in the evenings we ventured out and toured the city. The buildings in Madrid were magnificent and reflected the influence of Renaissance era architecture. The most beautiful building we visited was the Royal Palace, which was lavishly decorated with gold and fantastic frescos.
The tournament was very well organized, and with the exception of the team round, the tournament was identical to the format of the Olympics. The competition was shot on a rugby field that was built into the ground with concrete stands surrounding the field. There were many world class archers participating, including several 2000 Olympians and the '96 Silver medallist in the women's division! In the end, the U.S. was very successful and even brought home the most medals!
After the tournament, we attended what I think is the best banquet I have ever been to in my life. The banquet was held in a very nice restaurant and started off with a party where free drinks were served. Afterwards, dinner was served, then desert, and then the dance began. It was quite a sight to see so many people from different countries and culture getting along and having the time of their life, and let me tell you the Spanish like to party!!!
I definitely believe this was the best tournament I have ever attended. I think it should be noted that both Greg and Chris did very well both individually and in the team round. I hope this article will motivate some of you to do your best and experience the pleasures of international competition and travel.
On a personal note, I would like to thank all of those who have supported me throughout the years. Without them, such accomplishments would not be possible.
