4-H District 11 Tournament
December 13-15, 2001
On December 13-15th the District 11 4H tournament was held in Victoria, TX. This was the last indoor tournament of the 4H season after 8 invitational tournaments.
There were 165 entries in this tournament with 4H youngsters ranging in age from 5 to 18. This was the largest tournament in 4H history in A.
Eight- to Twelve-year olds shot at 9 meters unless they have graduated to 18 meters by shooting a 30 arrow score of 250 or more during one of the invitationals.
Those graduating archers shot 30 arrows at 18 meters until they shot a 30 arrow score of 200 and then they advanced to 60 arrows. 13-18 year olds shot 60 arrows rounds at 18 meters.
There were young ladies, gentlemen, compounds, recurves and even some bare bow participants. The district tournament was open to all district 4H archers, regardless of experience.
For many, it was their first tournament. In the middle of the day on Saturday a team round was shot with the entire fanfare that the participants could muster.
This time there was a saxophone, a goose call, and several home made drums for entertainment during team shooting. The 4H-archery project is primarily focused on exposure to archery. It is an introductory project.
However, there are four other groups of kids that need to be taken care of in the project and it does a fine job of accommodating them also. Many of the kids like the social aspect of archery that is occasionally interrupted by the shooting of arrows. Some youngsters want to learn to bow hunt and become more proficient with the bow. There is a group of kids that like to earn lots of trophies. And finally there is the core constituency of kids that want to be competitive on a state and national basis.
What all the kids have in common is a desire to have fun in archery, and a dedicated group of volunteers and parents whose primary goal is to make that happen
As can be seen by the attached photographs, fun was the operative word for the tournament.
