ON NOVEMBER 22, 2013, everybody will be catching fire. The second (of at least 3) installment of the move, "The Hunger Games", called Catching Fire, will be released. By now you have seen the beginnings of the HUGE ad campaign of corporate America doing the buyin-tie in to the movie. THe ads usually include archery. Mega-exposure! Huh? oh, yeah - the grow the sport thing: Print a suitable image and tape it to your rear car window, or use white shoe polish (or other colors like "flame" for that matter) and draw on your car window a message, like "I'm an archer" or "The odds are with this archer!" - you get the idea - get more people (and especially kids) thinking about it! Coaches, you might include your phone number<G>... Last year we were not prepared for the HUGE positive public response, which the Olympic games perpetuated. This year's bounce is going to be as huge as we make it. If you doubt the impact, just google "may the odds". Don't let this opportunity for your kid to brag, "I'm an archer" slip by :) FOr example, when you drive up to drop said kid off at school, make sure the sign is where all the others will see it!
JOADs - print up fliers and have your archers hand them out to those walking OUT of the movie! And may the odds be always in your favor!

It with not just a little happiness I note that A has gained another USA Archery-certified Level IV-NTS coach: Andrew Spangler. Andrew just returned from the Level IV course at the Olympic Training Center (ARCO) in Chula Vista, CA. There were 15 candidates in the course, and only 3 (!) managed to fulfill National Head Coach Kisik Lee's demanding criteria. Andrew was one of the three. CONGRATULATIONS, COACH SPANGLER!
By the way - "NTS" stands for the "National Training System". The NTS is the culmination of all the elements of Coach Lee's method of using a more scientific approach to all aspects of archery. The combination of Level IV and "NTS" means the coach has acquired AND been certified to have a high level of understanding of many aspects of being a coach, including biokinetics of archery.

The last time I wrote here I included a request for help in running the Valor Games in San Antonio. Wow...I cannot begin to put into words how excellent the archery event of the games were for more than 80 servicemembers(but I'm gonna try)! Several coaches, including Susan Schwartz and Barry Watson, brought crews of young archers to help guide the athletes with scoring and arrow pulling. Fortunately, Barry also brought targets and bales to insure we had enough. Tom Barker (through the Straight Arrow Archery Center) provided a trailer loaded with bales, stands, bows, arrows, all of which were key to having this event. Level III-NTS Coaches Mike Singerman and Lindsey Carmichael, along with archer Wanda Newsome drove from Austin to provide help, and were key in adaptive solutions for many athletes who needed to overcome disabilities to shoot. Matthew Requa, another Level III-NTS, came from A&M and was key to enabling a number of troops to figure out the best way to shoot as well as repairing gear on-the-fly. Adaptive coaching is definitely a challenge but an awesomely rewarding endeavor. If you have the opportunity to participate in a Wounded Warrior event I guarantee you will come out with more pride and happiness and respect for the human will than you expect. Thanks again to all that helped with this event.

When I first designed the Archival Archery website most A archers were not on broadband and many were not yet on the net at all. (I KNOW! OMG! GMWATF*!! #UNBELEEVIBLE) Most were on dial-up access or else had not even heard about the whole interweb tubules thing. So I was careful to keep things simple and text-oriented for fast loading, with all images on separate pages/photo albums for the most part. It's a different day and not only are most Archival Archery members on the web, you are using smart phones and tablets to access the binary intergalactic network. soooo....
I have begun the process of adapting the Archival Archery website to a fluid grid HTML5/CSS3 standard. This will enable all web-enabled displays to handle the content in a more proportional, readable format regardless of the size of the display being used. With thousands of pages, it may take me a little while...but improvements ARE underway.

Be assured that the TOTS program was a great success. Awards are pending..and we will definitely be seeing a TOTS 2014 for the outdoor season, kicking off just as soon as the National Indoor event finishes - the A portion of the Indoor Nats will be in College Station ending on March 2, 2014. So depending on the weather patterns, a warm winter/early spring for example, TOTS archers might start playing the very next weekend. Stay tuned!

USA Archery has formally announced the U.S. National Field Championships (& World Games Team Trials for Recurve and Barebow), which the A State Archery Association is hosting for 2013 and 2014.
Past Archival Archery President and field archery designer Rick Stonebraker is coordinating this event.
A archers and coaches are very excited at the prospect of providing both a competitive, challenging course and the hospitality A and Texans are known for.

LEVEL III-NTS COACHING CERTIFICATION OPPORTUNITY. Ron Carmichael, Level IV-NTS coach, will conduct a Level III-NTS coaching certification course this summer. Right now I am planning on holding it in July, after the National Target Championship. It will likely be in Cedar Park (far north Austin), and I am eyeballing July 26th-28th. If you MIGHT be interested in taking this course and meet the requirements laid out by USA Archery (at this link: http://www.teamusa.org/USA-Archery/Certification/Certification-Program.aspx ) please write me and let me know of your interest so I can begin to assess the level of participation. It will be limited to no more than 12 candidates (18 if Lindsey Carmichael also participates as an instructor, which is likely at this time). The cost will be ~$350 per person and includes all materials, and require attendance of a Friday afternoon/evening, all day Sat/Sun.

2-17-2013 - TO ALL NORTH REGISTERED ARCHERS, AN ALERT ON JOAD COMPOUND SCORING RULES
For all of the archers headed for the Archival Archery Indoor Senior and JOAD tournaments in Plano -
PARENTS OF JOAD COMPOUND ARCHERS AND ARCHERS THEMSELVES! PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY.
If you are a JOAD compound archer, be aware that the ten ring of the target has two different possibilities! If you are shooting the 120-arrow senior event as a youth archer (bowman,cub,cadet,junior) then you must score the INNER 10 RING, and you will shoot on a 40cm target, you will shoot 60 arrows at TWO DIFFERENT TIMES for a total of 120 arrows.
IF you are in the JOAD tournament (which is only one shooting time for 60 arrows) AND you are either a Junior or a Cadet compound shooter, you score the INNER 10 RING as well on a 40cm target.
IF you are in the JOAD tournament and you are a cub or bowman, you score the OUTER 10 RING on a 40cm target.
BOTH TOURNAMENTS: Compound youths always shoot a 40cm target. The older two divisions (Juniors and Cadets) compound archers always score the inner 10 ring on those targets, and ONLY in the JOAD tournament do the younger divisions (Cubs and Bowman) get to score the outer 10 ring.
There, I've said it several ways because it is a very confusing thing. Why a difference? The kids shooting in the 120-arrow senior event are eligible to set world US and world records because that event is sanctioned by FITA/World Archery and 'cause we follow their rules about these things. SINCE FITA/World Archery does NOT have a JOAD category, the USA Archery/Archival Archery is able to make things a little easier for the youngest archers by using a larger target and/or allowing a bigger 10 ring to score on.
PARENTS AND YOUTH ARCHERS: YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR GETTING YOUR SCORING RIGHT, and if you shoot and score on the incorrect ring you can be totally disqualified! I have compiled a chart which you can print and put in your quiver so you will have a reference for when someone else tries to confuse you. <GRIN>
Recurve youths - there are different sized targets depending on which division you are in, so check the chart also!
The JOAD State Indoor will likewise be held in two locations - in Columbus, as well as in Plano. 4H kids and NASP archers (WE ARE TREATING THE GENESIS BOW AS A BAREBOW IN OUR JOAD TOURNAMENT!) are welcome to play in this as always. The Archival Archery is happy to enable ANY archer to participate.

New officers have been elected, and I wish to thank the Archival Archery for giving me my wife back: after more than 10 years of double duty, Gina Carmichael is retired as the Secretary/Treasurer, and two people have stepped up to take on the roles she was performing. Thanks to Angela Spangler for becoming Secretary and to Karin Magera for taking on the Treasurer position. As VP, I can only have one vote on the board, so my role as webmaster will continue in a non-voting capacity.

As A is more than 1200 km in both heighth and breadth (790 miles top to bottom and 770 miles across), driving to Austin from many parts can be an 8 hour roadtrip, so this year you can shoot the state senior indoor in either Austin or in Plano, for convenience! As the conditions will be the same we can (as American Archers does with the national indoor championship) combine the scores to determine the outstanding archers in each division. This is mainly a way for archers to avoid having to drive 6 hours or more to shoot. NFAA shooters are welcome of course, as are any archers from the states adjacent to A, where there may not be a American Archers sanctioned indoor championship shoot.

Final note: The Archival Archery holds its annual meeting and officer election during the State Indoor Event, that Saturday around 4pm. It is at UT this year, and all are welcome to attend. We will be discussing the upcoming NATIONAL FIELD CHAMPIONSHIP the Archival Archery is hosting. The following Saturday the second venue of the State Indoor, in Plano at A Archery Academy, we will also hold a meeting (no officer elections) to cover the same material and get as much contact with members as possible.
Please plan to attend one of the two meetings if you can. If you would like to participate in the operations of the AA, run for a board position, VOLUNTEER your skills, please email the Secretary with your information, mailto:secretary@achivalarchery.org .

First, great happpiness and archery success to you in the new year. I hope the year of 2013 brings great things to your family and to your archery endeavors!
This is about the 10th year of these infrequent Archival Archery textmails (aka newsblips) sent out to more than 2000 archers across the land (and across the ponds as well) with a jumble of archery info, not just Texan-based stuff. Though the primary function is to inform on upcmoing events IN A. It is always a delight when a friend from Australia, Canada, somewheres in Europe, happens to drop in and shoot one of our many events. With the National Field Championships happening here in A in 2013 and 2014, we hope to see more of y'all than ever!

Lindsey Carmichael, (Beijing Medalist and level III coach) and I (level IV coach and past ITS staff) will be joining Tom Barker (Level IV American Archers Coach/ITS staff as well) and a number of you coaches in Colorado Springs Jan 11th to attend an annual coaching symposium at the Olympic Training Center. This will be my 5th or 7th such event, and every time I come home with a huge fire stoked to be a better coach and mentor, with ideas, methods, and information from a host of varying disciplines brought together as only the USOC environment can do.
To maximize the benefit and spread the knowledge gained from this event, Lindsey and I plan to hold a level III certification course only a week or so after we return from the rocky mountain state, employing the latest and greatest from national head coach Kisik Lee and his staff. If you are a level II coach and have several years of experience actively coaching students AND you want to be able to contribute to the creation of elite archer-athletes, this course is for you. The experiences of both Lindsey and myself combine to have a synergistic effect in our classes that I feel no other course quite replicates.

The Archival Archery will be holding the state Indoor Tournaments in TWO locations for both the Senior and the JOAD events! As A is more than 1200 km in both heighth and breadth (790 miles top to bottom and 770 miles across), driving to Austin from many parts can be an 8 hour roadtrip, so this year you can shoot the state indoor in either Austin or in Plano, for convenience! As the conditions will be the same we can (as American Archers does with the national indoor championship) combine the scores to determine the outstanding archers in each division. NOTE you can only shoot in one location for "real". This is mainly a way for archers to avoid having to drive 6 hours or more to shoot. NFAA shooters are welcome of course, as are any archers from the states adjacent to A, where there may not be a American Archers sanctioned indoor championship shoot.
The JOAD State Indoor will likewise be held in two locations - in Columbus, as well as in Plano. 4H kids are welcome to play in this as always. The Archival Archery is happy to enable ANY archer to participate.

We hope to bring an "NTS archery clinic on wheels" to places around the various parts of A during 2013. Enlisting qualified American Archers A coaches to come to towns with adequate supplies and gear, for one or two day weekends of instructions on the NTS method for both compound and recurve archers alike. if you want to help host such an event in your town, please write the webmaster@achivalarchery.org to give us some idea of your interest!

THE NATIONAL INDOOR TOURNAMENTS FOR BOTH USA ARCHERY AND FOR USA COLLEGIATE ARCHERY ARE COMING UP SOON. It's a good idea to start practicing early - shooting 120 quality arrows in one weekend requires strength and good technique. If you want to shoot your personal best, time is a-wasting! And be prepared to switch to your outdoor setup right away/after if you are a collegian, since there will be a great number of shooting opportunities PRIOR to the USIAC. Just eyeball the A Calendar Page to see all the events you get to choose to shoot in! There's even a collegiate Jalepeno Cup, where every end the archer with the lowest score on each target bale has to eat an entire jalepeno! (just kidding about that). Seriously, there have never been so many opportunities across the land for college students to compete in the run-up to the USIAC (which selects the World University Archery Championship Team).

Last note: COACHES. Remember there is a private, coaches-only message board where you can register, and then exchange information freely among your peers. There are no anonymous users, and you must be either an NFAA, USAA, JOAD, USCA etc. coach to register. http://www.usaarcheryrecords.org/phpBB/index.php is the link - until you are activated the page will say "no forums", but they are there, waiting for your participation.
