| California Cup A Funny Thing Happened At The Cal Cup  LOS CINCO BOBOS (Staten Holmes, Guy Krueger, Chris Shull, Vic Wunderle, and Rick Stonebraker)About a dozen Texans ventured to Sacramento for the California Cup, known simply as the Cal Cup. The event was a USAT event so lots of top archers made their way to the capitol of California. The weather was beautiful with clear blue skies, minimal clouds and absolutely no rain and limited wind. Before the start of the shoot, I walked over to my buddy Staten and with a confident squeeze on the shoulder said, "It is a good day to shoot a couple 1300's. Staten nodded in agreement. The shooting proceeded. Staten shot a fine 296 at 90 meters and was well on his way. A 322 at 70 meters and a 332 at 50 meters made a total of 950 points and he only needed a 350 at 30 meters. If I had known this, I would have stayed clear but then the story that later developed would not have happened. With one end to go, I discovered that I had just equaled my own score from the Gold Cup three weeks earlier and I still had three arrows to go. That is certainly good progress and hopefully at the next tournament, I can say the same thing with three arrows to go. I slide over to Staten's target and along with Joe McGlynn; we walked back down the field to shoot the final three arrows. I had no idea what Staten had at that moment. Anyway, I exclaimed "Happiness is equally your previous score at the Gold Cup with three arrows to go!" All the while jiggling the three in my quiver. Joe said that was a good positive statement. Then I said, "Happiness is a 1300 with three arrows to go!" A nod from each and we continued down the field. One more profound statement before we reached the shooting line, "Happiness is a 1270 with three arrows to go!" An askew glance from Staten did not clue me in to his current score but he dismissed the statement and got back to the business at hand. I had no idea Staten had a 1272 with three arrows to go. Had I known that, I would have never said what I said but in hindsight, it was pretty amusing. Thank heavens it all worked out for the best as Staten finished with two perfect tens that round and shot his first 1300 on the nose. And talk about the nose, Staten said he had trouble keeping the string on his nose on the last shot cause all he needed was an eight and that is exactly what he got - just enough. I have never known Staten to be greedy! So, it all worked out for the best. It is a good thing the walk back from 30 meters was a short one or I might have inadvertently told him the Ray Burke story. A long time ago, Ray was in China shooting and in a similar situation and in fact, the exact situation, Ray had a 1292 with one arrow to go and he ended up with a 1298 - ouch! Staten also had a 1292 with one arrow to go and achieved his 1300. That was a close call. Rick Stonebraker |

| Top Gun was Top FUN ! Around 60 young archers shot in the first A Top Gun Youth Open event, held in Victoria the weekend of June 22, 2002. Tom Barker coordinated this event, and a number of adult archers as well as parents came through for the kids, providing the volunteer help and valuable training and shooting expertise to help the youngsters. This event was intended to give them exposure and experience with the "Olympic Round" and shooting head to head/one on one, and it was a great success. | From the President 2nd Annual Archery Swap Fair Bring things you want to sell or trade to the 20th Anniversary A State Championship in Victoria July 6-7. The easiest way to sell, barter, or trade your archery items. OR, you can donate them to the Archival Archery and they will be auctioned or sold and the proceeds go towards the Cadet travel fund. Three aspiring cadets from the Archival Archery have qualified to compete in the Junior World Championship this year but only the junior divisions are fully sponsored so the cadets have to provide their own travel funds. |

| From the webmaster I've been harping a lot about the epidemic of viruses currently firestorming us all on the net, and in the month of June, my laptop has received (and Nortons intercepted) more than 43 (!) viruses in emails. Many people still don't realize that their computer is infected and being used as a platform for spamming their friends' computers with viruses, trojans, and worms. Here's a neat link where you can TEST your computer's vulnerability PC Flank It will check out your computer's exposure to the net. In addition, you MUST have some kind of firewall, such as Zone Alarm (free), and a copy of some antivirus software, such as Norton's Antivirus, with up-to-date virus definitions, to protect yourself as much as possible against infections. Don't become roadkill on the internet superhighway! |

| NArchival Archery Releases - Field Archery Results and World Field Team Selection FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE: June 25, 2002 CONTACT: Desirae Freiherr (719) 866-4621 Jay Barrs Claims Ninth Consecutive National Field Archery Title Spokane, Wash. - Jay Barrs (Sandy, Utah) captured his ninth consecutive and 14th career United States Field Archery Championship on Saturday in the men's Recurve Bow category. The event was held in Spokane, Washington. Barrs, a 1988 Olympic gold and silver medallist, compiled a two-day total of 672. Mike Gerard (Bluffdale, Utah) was second with a score of 646, while Joe McGlyn (Floral Park, N.Y.) placed third with a total of 641. The men's compound division was divided by a slim two-point margin. The men's Compound Bow title was won by Roger Hoyle (Cedar City, Utah) with a score of 712. Defending champion, Dave Cousins (Standish, Maine) placed second with 711 points. Jeff Button (Cottage Grove, Wis.) was third with 710 points. In the women's Recurve Bow division, Janet Barrs (Sandy, Utah) captured her sixth consecutive national championship, and seventh overall title, with a score of 605. Aya La Brie (Sun Prarie, Wis.) placed second with a score of 564. Kristin Michalnowski (Ft. Worth, A) finished third with 541 points. Nancy Zorn (Warrensville, Ill.) won the title in the women's Compound Bow division with a score of 684. Susan Thompson (Stony Point, N.Y.) placed second with 683 points, and Jahna Davis- Nunn (Helena, Mont.) was third with a total of 678. The men's Barebow title was claimed by Mark Applegate (Grass Valley, Calif.) with 595 total points. Skip Trafford (Tucson, Ariz.) placed second with a score of 569, followed by Harold Rush (Payson, Ariz.) with 558 points. The team was selected during the World Field Trials held June 23 in Spokane, Wash. The top three male and female compound, recurve and barebow archers were named to the team. Nine of the 18 team members were also members of previous U.S. World Field Teams. Mark Applegate, Janet Barrs, Jay Barrs, Jeff Button, Dave Cousins, Mark Gerard, Kathy Greene, Phyllis Shipman and Skip Trafford are among the athletes who have (sic). | Handicapping During the A Youth Open Top Gun a number of people inquired of Tom Barker about the handicapping technique he was using to even the playing field to maintain a good competition. It worked quite well, as there were a number of very close scores including 1-arrow shootoffs.
