| JOAD Nationals are on Target! The 21st NArchival Archery National JOAD Target Championships are this weekend and everything is set! The venue has been prepared, and it will likely be a very big event with lots of young archers attending. The general information page is here and the driving instructions and map is here. The roads are being worked on by the state, so keep an eye out for signs directing you on how to proceed when you get near the facility. Jim Coombe, CEO of the Cincinnati Junior Olympians, says that they have opened the main gate to the Voice of America and thus the venue is accessible very easily from the highway. Originally, they were going to have us use a side entrance but now it looks like we can use the main entrance on Tylersville, which means only one turn after exiting the highway on to Tylersville Road. |

| Be Careful What You Wish For, by Tim Humphrey As of July 2001 I joined the ranks of the Retired, I didn't plan it that way but it happened. I was not and am not ready to sit back and watch the grass grow. So I thought, "Im a NAA Level ll Instructor, I really enjoy archery (most of the time) what are the possibilities of starting an Archery Program here it Fort Worth?" As a result, I contacted several schools and other organizations I thought might be interested; generally the responses ranged from "Not at this time." to "No". The exception was Ft Worth Parks and Community Services; I am presently working with them to see if there is sufficient local interest to establish a program. | Results of the 20th Archival Archery State Target Championship The results have been posted for the Combined Senior State Target, JOAD State Target, and Gulf Coast Regional JOAD Target Championships.  A record number of archers attended, although the number was less than anticipated due to the two to three feet of rain that fell in the hill country of A right before the tournament began. | 118th NArchival Archery National Target Championships & US Grand Prix The 118th Archery Championships will be held soon, starting July 27th through August 2nd, in Canton, Michigan. The deadline was June 28th, but there is still plenty of time to register if you want to be a part of a HUGE archery event that will test your abilities and provide you with fun and memories for years to come. This site has hosted the event for the last few years, so they know how to do it right. For information, click here. By the way, the US Open/ "Grand Prix" portion is a separate event held in conjunction where archers from many countries go head-to-head in exciting "Olympic Round" competition. Competitors for this are selected and ranked based on their performance in the Championship portion which consists of two FITA rounds. |

| JOAD Training Camps The National Archery Association has ONE LAST JOAD Training Camp scheduled for this year! This camp is scheduled for Aug. 12-18 at the ARCO Olympic Training Center, Chula Vista, CA. These JOAD training camps are well worth the $250 charged and for many young kids will be an experience they remember for the rest of their life. The ARCO center is an enclave of athletic excellence and truly an uplifting place to attend for even a day, let alone a week! Oh yes, your archer will learn a LOT about his or her own archery techniques and will make new friends as well. For more information click here. |

| JOAD Target Stands Archival Archery Pres Rick Stonebraker came up with an idea several months ago that was surprisingly simple yet highly useful. It, and many other JOAD-related topics, were discussed on the Archival Archery Message Board. He asked why it wouldn't be possible to LOWER the target height for our youngest JOAD classes. This could be accomplished by either making a smaller stand, or by adding additional bolt holes to stands that are adaptable. He pointed out that it would be very important to be consistent in the height of the bullseye, and has suggested that placing the bullseye at 100cm (instead of the typical 130cm) should suffice. Rick made a very good, sturdy stand from about $10 worth of 1x3 furring strips for this last weekend's State Target Championships, and our youngest archers used it with great success. | FITA Recognizes Master World Records As of April 1, 2002, FITA recognizes world records in the masters division. Every archer competing that is born on the December 31, 1952 or earlier will be able to compete for a claim in the 2002 Master World Records. This came about when Rick Stonebraker asked Rick Mack of the National Archery Association to write a proposal to FITA to consider world records for the masters division and possibly a world championship as well. | Oh dear! "I am asking you all, begging you to please, forward this email on to anyone and everyone you know, PLEASE. I have a 5 year old son named Christopher John Mineo, Jr., nickname C.J. I am from Brooklyn N.Y. He has been missing since May 11 2001..." THIS IS A HOAX!!! The kid was never missing; in fact, it's unlikely he ever existed. Read the entire message, the story, and the rationale behind why it's not true at Snopes: As webmaster for the AA, I receive literally dozens of virus-laden emails each week, and often see friends and acquaintences falling for hoaxes such as these. Don't spam out a message of this nature unless you are CERTAIN it is true and real. Otherwise you just spam up your friends, who won't be happy! If in doubt, you can use the links in this article to do a quick, free, search on key words like "Mineo" or "TAX", to get the lowdown on the hoax BEFORE you send it on. E-Mail Tax: This gem comes in cycles. Last week it was back in full strength. Neither Congress nor the U.S. Postal Service has any plans for taxing your e-mail messages. OTOH, I imagine if we taxed everyone a buck for each lame joke or hoax sent, we could balance the budget. Want details? Zip over to TruthOrFiction.com, an excellent site for hoax checking. Jdbgmgr.exe: The top hoax a few weeks ago warned you to delete Jdbgmgr.exe from your system because it is supposedly a virus sent automatically by Microsoft Messenger--but it is actually a necessary Java file. Read the details here: "Virus Hoax Spreads by E-Mail." Sulfnbk.exe: This nasty little number took even bright people by surprise. Unfortunately, it still does. Like Jdbgmgr.exe, the hoax explains that Sulfnbk.exe is a virus. (It isn't; it's a legit file on your PC that's used for fixing long file names.) Then the message provides step-by-step instructions on removing the alleged virus. If you fell for it, or know someone who did, you'll want to read--and maybe even print out--"Undoing the Damage Done by Virus Hoax," which talks you through the quick recovery: Patching the self-inflicted hole in your foot A Card for You: Oh, my, it's the "WORST VIRUS EVER!!!...CNN ANNOUNCED IT. PLEASE SEND THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW!!!" The message goes on to proclaim "a new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive ever!!!!" (About the only thing Microsoft has sent out that's been that destructive is Win ME, but that's another story.) Don't fall for this one either. | A A&M does it again No one tells me anything! :) The NArchival Archery Nock Nock just arrived minutes ago, and in it I find out that the Aggies of A&M once again, for the SEVENTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR!, won USIAC (United States Intercollegiate Archery Championships). Competing against 19 other schools, the proud Aggies captured the championship title, the mixed compound and recurve titles. James Madison U. of Harrisonburg, Virginia came second and Michigan State of East Lansing, Michigan, was third. See the NockNock for full details, and next time, somebody tell me these things!! |
