| State JOAD Target 2003 - Results, Writeup, and Photos This was the first time for hosting by the Cameron County JOAD, in the southernmost reaches of A, but you couldn't tell by looking either looking at it or experiencing it. It was great. The venue was a completely fenced-in area adjacent to the frontage road of the main highway through Brownsville, Highway 77. This insured that plenty of civilians got an eyeful every time they drove by during the two-day event. There was a lot of traffic, too, since on one side of the freeway is a large shopping mall with a host of great restaurants, and hotels up and down the close side (the venue actually backed up to one hotel's parking lot!). Just beside the venue was an 8 screen movie theater, and to the north side was a large circus, complete with elephant rides. You can see the pictures of the big top behind the targets in the pictures at the link below. If that wasn't enough good stuff, Mexico itself was a mere 10 minutes away (including the border crossing) and several families had a great time shopping and dining "abroad", including yours truly.  In addition, the organizers managed to get front page newspaper photos and several pages of coverage as well as evening news footage on the first day of the event! GREAT publicity for the sport of archery and most unusual in this writer's 6 years of experience attending both state and national events. Not even the National JOADs have in the past gotten coverage so well, even when they were 30 minutes from CNN headquarters! Kudos to the organizers for furthering the public's awareness of archery. The ancient Roman archery goddess Diana (or Artemis if you are Greek) was surely looking down and protecting the archers for that weekend. Though Friday afternoon there were high winds (25 mph) blowing when we rolled into town, we chose to take the quick drive out to South Padre island and dip toes into the chilly, clean, Gulf of Mexico and walk along the wonderfully clean and nearly empty beaches. Saturday morning, during field setup, there was very little wind and skies were clear to partly cloudy, a trend that continued till the end of shooting on Sunday around 12:30PM. By 2PM, the trophies and awards all handed out, the field cleared, Diana then turned loose a huge deluge of several inches in just a portion of an hour! So it was a great tournament with little wind, decent temperatures, and almost no direct sun to contend with. A few archers got some fire ant bites, and there were some small thorn bush remnants from the mowing of the field to be aware of. All in all that makes this one of the best executed Target events in A, ever. | 2003 State Target Championship - REGISTER NOW!!! The information for the State Target is firm and the wheels are turning. Linda and Wyatt Misenheimer and their Top Tens JOAD have agreed to host the event in the Fort Worth Area. The date will be September 13 & 14th - a partial FITA on Saturday, lunchtime will have pizza cooked onsite and a chance at a different, neat, fun archery competition, the second distance in the afternoon, and an OR in the evening. Sunday shooting of the shorter distances should be done by 3PM. Open practice will be Friday evening the 12th. | Congratulations to the Judge! During the NArchival Archery JOAD Nationals this last week in Denver Linda Misenheimer of Fort Worth joined her husband Wyatt.  But Wyatt was at a shoot in A, and Linda was busy helping out as a judge at the JOAD Nats in Denver (including helping to set up the field before hand). So how did she do this? Well, she successfully passed the exam and thereby joined the ranks of NArchival Archery NATIONAL JUDGES. There are now TWO national judges in the Misenheimer household so son Jake has twice the overhead as before! Jake, does this mean you can only get an opinion from one parent? |

Level II Course In Arizona There is a training class being offered in Scottsdale, Arizona in a week or so. There is still room for you at the Level II coach/instructor course. If you know someone that is interested in helping teach archery then this is the class they need! No prerequisites, come as you are. The National Archery in the School program has begun in AZ starting in Gilbert. More certified instructor will be needed as the program expands.Here is a summary of the information from the Arizona website. ( click here to get to the full information page)Who: NArchival Archery members are eligible to take the Level II Instructor/Coach Certification course. There are no prerequisites except NArchival Archery membership or pending membership. The class will be taught by Level III Coach Instructor Mike Koistinen. What: The 30 hour class is great for all that are interested in archery as a whole. Safety, archery principles, and bow tuning are among the topics presented. Where: Scottsdale Community College on Saturday. The Northeast corner of Chaparral Road and the 101 Freeway in Scottsdale. The Saturday classes will be conducted in the SCC Fitness center classroom. The SCC Fitness center is located on the west side of the campus. The Fitness center is Southeast of the Football Stadium. Sunday classes will be held at a local range, to be determined. When: Saturday July 12th, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at SCC The registrations are needed ASAP so that the instructional materials can be ordered. How: |

| Star? There are several kinds of registrations for NArchival Archery tournaments. I have received a number of questions recently concerning what is required, what it costs, what it is. "Sanctioned NArchival Archery qualifiers" are for the purposes of getting qualifying scores for USAT and some trial events, and costs $15. You request a sanction by filling out this form, printing it, and mailing it to the NArchival Archery at least 4 weeks prior to when you wish to hold the shoot. At least three archers are required. A Qualifier can be any 3 or more people (even from the same club) and are less formal although FITA rules should be followed. A more significant form of registration is the "STAR FITA registration". Each one costs $50 and must be accomplished at least 45 days prior to the event, since the NArchival Archery must file the form with FITA and receive certification. Scores shot at Star FITAs are used for National Rankings at the end of the year, for World Records and includes the sanctioned level listed above, so there is no need to do both a STAR FITA and a SANCTIONING. The STAR FITA registration and conducting of such an event is more rigorous and demanding, requiring the event be conducted under FITA rules regarding the whole shootin' match - layout, judges, etc. A Star FITA must be run strictly by FITA rules, must have a judge present and they're expected to have a reasonable number of people from diverse areas. In other words, it has to be a real competition!We Texans have had 2 people score the equivalent of 4 new world records so far this year and none of the scores counted as FITA world records because the events weren't registered by the organizers as Star FITAs. By the way, the A State Target coming up in September is already registered as a STAR FITA event, so feel free to register, shoot, and set a new record. It will be official when you do! | Pekin Archers Have A New Web Site! Eva Fuller sent us a head-up on a new JOAD-related website: "WE ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE www.pekinarchers.org IS UP AND RUNNING. A GREAT BIG THANK YOU TO MARY HOLTZER FOR ALL HER HARD WORK." Great logo and it looks like they will continue the tradition of archery in Illinois, as they serve both NFAA and NArchival Archery JOAD archers. It's worth a peek! |

| Other Neat Websites There is a website for the manufacturer of recurve risers called EXTREME, and they have put up a fairly clear and concise guide to setting up a recurve bow, tuning, and diagnosing arrow behavior. This company is based in Norway, and according to their website: "BMG is short for Bertil Martinus Grov who is archer and bowyer. The company BMG was founded in 1998 when the A98 model was made. BMG focuses at the developing of high end Olympic style archery equipment." The internet is such a useful tool for sharing information, it almost makes putting up with spam worth it. Anyway, these folks also have some interesting products - have you ever, for example, seen WOODEN arm guards? | Code of Conduct for Archer Athletes of the NAA The sport of Target Archery as practiced under the aegis of the National Archery Association (and FITA) is unique in a number of ways. A most noticeable aspect becomes apparent and obvious when one compares the way both the athletes and their parents behave during the actual competition of youth sports. Manners. Maturity. Respect for self and for others. Honor. Control. It is remarkable, when you then look at say, little league baseball, ice hockey, even pee-wee and high school football, the difference in the way all behave. Not to cast stones (or arrows) at those sports, just noting what for me is an observable fact. Archers just seem to be more well, sportsmanlike. How many times have you seen an archer have an equipment failure, and his or her fellow competitors step forward to offer equipment, assistance, and support? That is a common decent behavior that we in archery take for granted, but that one rarely sees in other sports. I recently had cause to think on the conduct of our young archers. It is enlightening and interesting and helps to explain the differences perhaps, to read the CODE OF CONDUCT for archers competing in NAA-sanctioned events. | Newsflash! Archery Was In the Games of the XXIIIrd Olympiad! A few days ago, while at the NArchival Archery National JOAD Target Championship, I had the pleasure of spending a short time with Darrell Pace, who gave me a quick lesson in shooting pool. He's a self-confident, friendly, approachable, and congenial kind of person, fun to talk to, and I enjoyed the game of 8-ball, for sure.  Just a few days later I was browsing a bookstore in the Cucamonga Community Library in California, and came across a book staring me plumb in the face - Games of the XXIIIrd Olympiad of 1984 (Los Angeles). Eagerly opening the book to page 46, I read about archery at this Olympiad held some 20 years ago, and there was the gold medal winner - Darrell Pace - and it reminded me that in addition to being a normal, regular ol' guy, Darrell Pace is nothing of the sort - he is a two-time Olympic gold medal winner (and much much more)! | NArchival Archery National JOAD Target Championship Photos and Results The championship was held in a suburb of Denver known as the "Tech Center", also the location for the Denver Broncos' Training facility.  The venue was actually a large, lovely park. Green, thick grass on a sloping field, adequate and close parking (no humping the bowcases huge distances). Plenty of room for more than 80 target bales. Nearly perfect conditions including light winds, cool temperatures, and no rain (till just before the OR finished). Of course, the rains actually terminated the recurve OR after the second round of matches, when they arrived full of bluster and gusts.A number of photos are available at this link. | SAVE YOUR OXL CARD The US Olympic Organization has created a way of promoting the US Olympic movement, and the NAA. If you are a member of the NArchival Archery you have probably already received a letter in the mail with what looks like a credit card titled "OXL". It has your name and USA ARCHERY as well as the USA Olympic logo and the NArchival Archery logo on the front. This card is NOT a credit card, and please do not throw it away.  The letter accompanying the card is from Brad Camp of USA Archery (the NAA) and it includes a website URL (http://www.usolympicteam.com/oxl) where you can log on using the 16 digit number on the front of the card. The website and the letter may not explain adequately "what the deal is". So here's the deal as best as I can figure out (though I am guessing a little - the information available is sketchy just a mite bit). You can use this card to get discounts from the US companies that have contracts with the USOC! They in turn (here is where I am guessing) donate money to the USOC on behalf of ARCHERY.For example: Right now and through the end of this year, United Airlines will give you a 5% discount on tickets, and an additional 5% if booked more than 30 days in advance. So you can get 10% off the price of a ticket! Gateway computers will give you 7% off the price of a computer. Now THAT can be a real chunka change! Likewise, Marriott, Monster.com, and Nu Skin (cosmetics/skin care) will give you discounts if you follow the instructions. The best explanation for all this is on the NAA's new website, at this link. So do NOT throw the card away! Use it and you get a discount with the companies that support the US Olympic movement and in turn you support our US Olympic Athletes. I suspect that since they will know which people belong to which sport (like us and archery), that ultimately the more of us NArchival Archery archers that use the card, the more USOC benefit is directed towards the NAA's programs. | THE Archival Archery GOES WIRELESS!! Tim Humphrey, By using a number of smaller speakers, the system avoids BLASTING the archers' eardrums out that are unlucky enough to be close to the DOS stand as well.  an esteemed barebow archer and longtime Archival Archery member, has devoted a lot of time and energy to assembling a public announcing system (PA system) for the Archival Archery to use during outdoor (and indoor) events. It will be ready in time for the upcoming Archival Archery Target Championship in Fort Worth. He carefully calculated, measured, and planned a system that uses wireless walkie-talkies with external speakers, so we don't have to worry about tripping over the wires as we go to and from the targets.
The core of the system is a set of FOUR high quality Midland Family Radio System (FRS) transceivers, each connected to a 6" indoor/outdoor speaker and set 75 feet apart, up and down the field in front of the shooting line (beyond the "dropped arrow" line. The radios are housed in wood to prevent the occasional arrow from passing through, and the power comes from regular Archival Archery batteries. A fifth FRS is used by the DOS to speak to all of the archers - his/her voice is relayed to all of the speakers, so that there is little or no delay and echo. Since the speakers are placed closer to the archers and to the ends of the field, the volume at each one doesn't have to be as loud as when there are only a couple of huge speakers in the middle of the field. Lastly, Tim included a tone generator in the design so that it can provide the shooting signals without the DOS having to BLAST a whistle. As with the AA's many target bales, the target stands, the 10' by 20' tents, and such other gear, the new PA system becomes part of the Archival Archery resources available to any Archival Archery member wishing to stage a tournament, anywhere in the great state of A.
