USADA UNVEILS PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT CAMPAIGN
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Jan. 23, 2004) – The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) unveiled a series of six public service announcements entitled “My health. My sport. My victory. I compete clean,” USADA Chief Executive Officer Terry Madden announced Friday.

The public service announcements highlight seven athletes who are 2004 Olympic hopefuls, including a pair of past Olympic medal winners.

“These public service announcements were developed to showcase athletes, who work hard, elect not to the use of performance-enhancing substances and compete with the spirit of the sport in mind,” said Madden. “We anticipate that these PSAs will provide an encouraging message to athletes of all ages and abilities throughout the nation that you can succeed and live a healthier life without the use of performance-enhancing drugs. The relationship between an athlete and sport is special and worth protecting.”

Shot putter John Godina (Northridge, Calif.) and weightlifter Tara (Nott) Cunningham (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) are two of the featured athletes in USADA’ s PSA campaign. Godina and Cunningham are pursuing additional medals at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Godina collected a bronze medal at the 2000 Olympics and a silver medal at the 1996 Olympics, while Cunningham won a gold medal in the women’s weightlifting competition in 2000.

Godina and Cunningham are members of the USADA Athlete Ambassador program, which involves current and retired athletes contributing to USADA’s educational programs.

Softball pitcher Jennie Finch (La Mirada, Calif.), track cyclist Giddeon Massie (Bethlehem, Pa.), kayakers Jeanne and Marie Mijalis (Miami, Fla.) and archer Guy Krueger (Blessing, A) are part of the PSA campaign, and vying to represent the United States at the 2004 Olympics. Biographies on each of the seven athletes involved this campaign can be found at the end of this release.

The public services announcements were produced by Industrial Park, a New York-based production company headed by Jackie Bisbee. Mike Dignum and Audrius Barzdukas of Los-Angeles-based Chaos coordinated the spots, while Michael Schenk produced the PSAs.

USADA is the independent anti-doping agency for Olympic sports in the United States, and is responsible for managing the testing and adjudication process for U.S. Olympic, Pan Am and Paralympic athletes. USADA is equally dedicated to preserving the integrity of sport through research initiatives and educational programs.
Guy Krueger, archery “People want to be inspired, and it is up to us, as Olympic Athletes, to fulfill those needs in every aspect of our lives. I felt that working with USADA on this PSA gave me a chance to fulfill my responsibilities and give back to the community with a positive, sincere message. I am honored to be a part of this, because the youth are our gateway to the future. And if we can change one kid's mind about using performance-enhancing substances, then we've succeeded in making a difference.”

Saudi Aramco Magazine: History's Curve
"As graceful as sculpture, yet packing enough power to pierce armor, the recurved bow was the top cavalry weapon of pre-industrial Asia. Over centuries, Arab, Persian and Turkish bowyers learned to join wood, horn and sinew and to shape bows with tips that "recurved" forward. The results were compact enough to be used with accuracy from a galloping horse. Now, American bowyer Lukas Novotny is try to find out how they did it"

This is the opening of an excellent article written by Lee Lawrence, published recently by Saudi Aramco, concerning the origins of the recurve bow, and archery on horseback, in the fertile crescent. There are a number of good photographs in the article. Our thanks to Saudi Aramco for permission to post this on our website, and to see more photos by the photographer, click on this link.

Click on this link for the full 6 megabyte-size adobe acrobat format article - it is worth the download time as the photos are splendid and the story is entertaining as well as informative.

On this same vein of the "roots" of archery, there is a great website devoted to ATARN ( Asian Traditional Archery Research Network).

To go to the ATARN website, please use this link. Thumbrings, arrows, quivers, dozens of different kinds of bows with origins Chinese, Mongolian, Central Asia, Malaysia, Tibet, Turkey, India, all sorts of things of interest to an archer It's worth a click but be warned, you may be there for HOURS.

The registration information for the Lone Star FITA has been - wait a minute! - It's an Olympic Year
Yes, It's an Olympic Year! So the Lone Star FITA is a "not-so-FITA" event. Instead of shooting a "FITA" of 4 different distances(144 arrows total), this year only the LSF will be conducted in the Olympic style - the morning will be an Olympic Qualifier for ranking, followed by single-elimination OR head-to-head process. Go to the registration page for more information.
And check the
calendar for more tournaments with this format - it will be the norm for this year.

PLEASE BE AWARE OF DEADLINES!
The deadline for the National Indoor Tournament, held regionally throughout the United States, is rapidly approaching! Please be sure to get your registration in and paid for to insure your place on the line no matter where you choose to shoot. Here is the link to the NAA's acrobat document on the event. Don't miss out!

Oh, by the way.....FEBRUARY 6, 2004 IS THE DEADLINE! enough said...

Michael Braden's Compound Seminar
Twenty-one youth archers from around the state participated in a once in a lifetime experience January 17-18 in Victoria, A.

We had beginners, intermediates and advanced archers. The Victoria county 4H archery project hosted and the Coastal Bend JOAD clubs sponsored a fabulous weekend of youth compound archery.
Michael Braden, professional archer, outstanding teacher and all around nice guy was the lead instructor.

Adam Guiggesberg, United States Archery Team member, assisted Michael with equipment modifications while Tom Barker, Dale Garner, Shelby Fischer, Randy Morgan, Brain Heinsohn, Mellisa Ceballos and Mark Lesak helped with instruction. T.C. Baker, Kevin Barker and Marcia Barker did the video taping of the kids while John Bradley took scores of digital pictures. Denise and Michael DeBord, Kathy Heinsohn, Tammy Pizzitola made sure the kids were hydrated and snacked up. Todd Janota and Danny Miller cooked hamburgers for the multitude. Janet Lesak headed up the registration and name tag distribution.

Saturday morning was a little slow while the kids were broken into groups to shoot, be video'd and show what their current form was. The concern was to make sure the kids were not "shot out" by the time they got their turn with Michael. We felt it was important to do the pre-analysis to record the baseline and for the future understand how much they had improved. While some groups were shooting, others watched video tapes of compound and recurve archers.  Everyone broke for lunch at noon to refuel on those hamburgers.

After lunch Michael spent some time talking and showing proper compound archery form. Everyone worked on their own individual shot sequence. About 2:30 everyone got up to shoot. Michael worked one on one with everyone until about 7:00PM when he got through with most of the archers. While Michael was working with a couple of archers, the rest of the instructors were reinforcing what Michael had told them.  Sunday morning Michael shot a little and talked about aiming before finishing up with the few kids that didn’t get their one on ones Saturday evening.

After this we took a short break and then went back to analyze and video every archer’s “after” form. It was amazing how much the youth archers had improved. Many were shooting consistently in the yellow due to the improved form. About 11:30 we wrapped up the camp with a brief discussion on goal setting and adjourned at noon.  The camp evaluation forms confirmed what I had seen and heard; we hit a home run with this camp.

Everyone wanted more time with Michael (especially some of the instructors) and each and every archer felt they had picked up some important improvements in their form. In the words of several kids, it was “Sweet!”

The AA, as a non-profit outfit, is always grateful to those who show their support by donating to the cause. We now make it easy for you to show your pleasure and appreciation for what you see on the website by using PayPal.
PayPal lets you use your credit card to quickly and easily contribute, just fill in the blanks and you are done. Try it now! Quick and Easy, and you can choose any amount - please remember that it is the thought that counts!

Also, we are fortunate enough to receive a few pennies each time someone follows the small boxed advertisements you might see on some of our web pages. These are guaranteed by Google to be family-safe, and they are "targeted" only in that the ads usually have something to do with the words on the page itself. Since we are all about archery the small text links (NO GRAPHICS and NO POPUPS!) usually deal with archery or else public service organizations. Cool! So if you see something that catches your eye, please check it out.

We'll have more on this in the next issue, including a public acknowledgment here for each and every donation made (unless you request anonymity).

State JOAD Indoors 2004 - it is not too late!
A registration page for ONLINE REGISTRATION in the A State JOAD Indoor Tournament is still available on the website.

The event is this next weekend!(This year will be the same location as 2002/2003)

Click for the JOAD State Indoor registration page and the summary of all STATE JOAD ARCHERS registered so far .

If you need a map, use this link to find your way to Bay City.

As usual, the treasurer will NOT cash your entry fee until AFTER the deadline date. So register and pay now, and if you need to cancel we simply shred the check. You insure that you will have a space on the shooting line, which is important as space is indeed limited. Delay at your own risk.

(reminder: all archers are welcome, not just "NAA" archers - but only registered NArchival Archery members are eligible to "place" and take home a trophy. NArchival Archery Registration forms can be filled out at the tournaments to complete your eligibility in time for the event.

Check the main page of the AA for more.

And by the way - the main page has changed - all of the "what's new" items are now in a small box. To see more than just a few of the items, click on the "DOWN" label at the top of the box, which makes the items scroll. If you click several times the scroll will speed up. You can stop it by clicking the STOP label but you will have to click it once for each time you clicked DOWN.

If you have good aim (and what archer doesn't? ) then you can click a hyperlink in the item as it scrolls past. Try it and you'll find it is a great way to see past items. Incidentally I never delete them - they are simply moved to another page. If you want to scan past "what's new" items, use the link at the bottom of the items listing (or you can click here). Likewise ALL OF THE CALENDAR/SCHEDULE items from the past are stored, rather than deleted. Click here to see them, or look for the link to past items on the schedule page.

New Dress Code?
There is a thread of interest on the Archival Archery message board you might want to look at.

Apparently the FITA organization has issued a new set of rules about dress code at Championship events. They are due to go into effect on April Fool's Day but there is no foolin' about some of the measures included. If they are implemented in your NArchival Archery and Archival Archery events you will have to make some changes to your wardrobe. Sandals, Socks, and Hats, Oh My!!!

You can see the new rules at this link.
