| Have You Ever Been Coached? (To all of the international subscribers - this mini-issue deals only with one kind-of US-focused topic - we will go back to a full spectrum of archery interests with our next newsletter - but on second thought - the basic thought of this issue MAY apply to you and your coach and your own national organization - in other words, can you honor your coach?) Coaches are key to the important things in life, since there is very little we do that cannot, that does not, benefit from having an expert to show us how to be better, to do better. Most importantly, for the majority of archers that do NOT stand on the number 1 spot, coaches are STILL an integral part of "getting better" and "doing better". Coaches teach the basics as well as the advanced method, and insure that anyone who cares to, can learn a better way to shoot. Good coaches also teach HOPE. YOU nominate your coach to the Coach Development Council, the winner becomes the USA Archery Coach of the Year, and is then submitted to the USOC for consideration for United States Olympic Coach of the Year. And you can start this process easily by filling in the form and emailing it to Lawrence Sullivan, head of the CDC. (naacoach4@msn.com)I feel strongly that it's very important that the membership make an effort to recognize and reward the excellence in our coaches, and this short newsletter issue is dedicated solely to helping you to think about this, decide who in your life has made a difference as a coach, and them nominate them for recognition by USA Archery. For most coaches, the profession of coaching is entirely an act of love and charity, certainly not a way to get financially rich. To be even nominated is one way to pay back for their efforts and involvement in the sport! I'm going to post some clips from the forms currently on the USA Archery website, so you can see how easy it is for you to put in a good word for your coach! And the first step of recognition using the forms is "USA Archery Coach of the Year", and that person will then be a candidate for the USOC Coach of the Year. PLEASE DO IT NOW?!COACH OF THE YEAR AWARD USA Archery is pleased to announce the selection criteria for the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) Coach of the Year Recognition Program. Four award categories will be considered. The criteria for each are listed below. Criteria for Selection Process for Selection Each year the Coaches Development Committee (CDC) accepts nominations of candidates for consideration as USA Archery Coaches of the Year. If no nominations are received, the CDC will nominate candidates. Nomination letters should be sent to: USA Archery/CDC Nomination letters should include verification of the required criteria for selection, along with other supporting material. 1. 1. Unpaid coach Councilman Coaching Science Award 1. Utilization of science in coaching for year in question (New as of 2004). OK, at this point hopefully you have someone in mind, especially if you have been coached by this person. How do you nominate? That is easy, the CDC has created a form just for the purpose of nominating someone. Here is some of what is on the official nominating form, to show you some of the criteria: NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR NOMINATION FORMA National Coach of the Year nominee is a coach of an Elite Level Club, Collegiate, Pan-Am, World Championship or Olympic Games coach or the coach of an elite athlete who competes at the highest level of your sport. This award is based on the accomplishments of the coach for the year. The nominee must currently be coaching or within one year of their retirement. COACHING CONTRIBUTION (Win/Loss Record, Athletes Coached, All-Americans, Olympians, etc.) HONORS/RECOGNITION (Local, State, National and International) COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT SERVICE TO SPORT Click HERE to access this award's nomination form on the USA Archery website. Note that the coach need only to have coached a single athlete to excellence, or could have coached an entire team of athletes! Now, in addition to the simple "Coach of the Year", there is also the category of "Developmental Coach of the Year". Now, I KNOW that there are some great JOAD coaches and collegiate coaches out there that are deserving of recognition in this category! WHO DO YOU KNOW? NOMINATE! Since science plays such an important part of the Olympic sporting elite level, there is a special award for the coach that devises and employs science in the coaching process. Please, don't just delete this message until you have given it some thought. This is important and YOU can participate, contribute, actually start the process. Who do you think should be honored?
