| FIRST.... Please note there are a LOT of opportunities to shoot indoor arrows coming up. Austin JOAD Archers will hold a JOAD Team shoot on Jan 24th in Austin. There will be a traveling trophy involved - this annual event will allow a JOAD in A to hold a trophy for a year, and then have a chance to win it again, or it goes to another JOAD depending on the outcome next year. Sounds like fun! The Archival Archery state JOAD indoor is going to be the 7th of February, pending final ok from Rec Sports at the University of A - if `ok' it will be at the Anna Hiss Gym archery range. Failing that the JOAD event will be rolled into the State event the following weekend. (This will be the same weekend as the Las Vegas Shoot. Fortunately not many JOADs will be likely to travel to Las Vegas, Nevada. ) The Archival Archery state indoor will be February 13-15th, and this is a "fer shore" happening event at this point, being held ALSO at the UT Anna Hiss Gym. Registration for this event is online and active, for the 8th year or so running. Check the gold box at the top of the Archival Archery website for links to all of these. |

| 2008 4-H Indoor Tournament Series Concludes WOW - EIGHT TOURNAMENTS!  This year the District 11 4-H area in South A held 8 tournaments throughout the region, involving hundreds of young archers. Over the years this district has given an opportunity to literally thousands of kids to shoot archery. In fact, this very active 4-H archery program has provided the United States with some of the most outstanding young archers on a continual basis for years as well. | Unique Archery-Related Web Developments There have been several noteworthy archery-related additions to the web recently.  Two entrepreneurial archers have founded a business that meets what I consider the primary basis for web success. It does something that others have not yet done on the web. Their business plan makes a lot of sense and I think it is bound to succeed given their talents and approach. Tara Robey and Lorinda Cohen have created a consulting and publicity outfit for archers and coaches. They plan to provide consulting to the entertainment industry, for example. FINALLY the move director can insure that the character shooting a bow not only isn't holding it upside down, but is actually able to shoot it with reasonable form AND safety. That's not all they do, though. Their website says "Archery House is Designed to Promote Archery Through Program Development, Athletic Coaching and Consulting, Integration of the Entertainment Industry, and Event Managing". It passes my "test of uniquity" that so many web ideas fail. Take a look at Archery House... I also recently heard from Adam Guggisberg, a Texan archer for many years, who has also launched a web endeavor: ArcheryLessonsOnline. It is based on a new paradigm that leans on the characteristics of the web and some of the new but fairly basic (ie, reliable) technologies. For example you can easily send a digital video clip of an archer shooting an arrow over the web, say, a 25-second long video of the shot cycle. A coach can receive and then look at the video and make judgments, decisions, and recommendations. The coach can then mark it up with a software tool to indicate alignment, straightness, posture, etc. and send it back to the archer (or the archer's local personal coach). This is what Adam does for compound archers. This gives an compound archer of any level of expertise in any remote location yet another option for coaching and training!Just as sidenote - the staff of the Olympic Training Center (ARCO) in Chula Vista routinely utilize the web and Skype video to coach, even around the world. You can use it (skype and the net) to keep in touch (visually by using live video) with your loved ones and family on the other side of the globe, anytime. Check it out! | UC Berkeley Archery Does It Again The collegiate archery club at UC Berkeley first came to my attention when they released a YouTube video as part of an engineering project (E128). Their professor has been an unique enabler of "outside-of-the-box"thinking when it comes to the concept of physical design. The video was with regard to the compound bow's operation. It's truly cool. Just as powerful as that video is and was, their latest video offering conveys to me an energy that shows youthful exuberance and joy. If JOAD is our foundation for the future of archery then perhaps it is not exagerating to say that collegiate archery is more like the eagle taking wing. Please check this page out on the Archival Archery website, and view the videos to see just what I mean. You can also do a YouTube search for "E128" to see other videos that professor Dennis K. Lieu has caused his students to create through the years. It's well worth your surfing time! And the video on the archery club is also an indication that COLLEGIATE ARCHERY is not only alive but totally kicking! |

Our main goal is to develop Olympians from the Chula Vista and San Diego areas in the sport of Archery, and our training program and practices are designed to allow our archers to reach their full potential. The RAC is run by the Head National Coach and the most successful archery coach in Olympic history, Coach Kisik Lee. By following his unique training system, archers will excel to their highest potential in a FUN and SAFE environment. Our instructors are Resident Athletes who train full-time for the Olympics and are Certified Instructors with USA Archery. Our club also offers a unique fun-filled family environment. All equipment is supplied, and we offer family and military discounts. We will also be having several competitions in the near future with prizes for the winners. RAC offers more then any other archery club in the world when it comes to potential for growth." I am very interested in the effect that this will have on these young archers - being able to learn the BEST method starting from day one, hour one, minute one, and being able to absorb the wonderful environment of the Olympic Training Center. There is a powerful element of "striving for excellence" at each of the OTCs, and to have elite practitioners as your JOAD instructors is bound to benefit the kids but also the instructors and help them to be fundamentally better archers.
And now to turn the spotlight on another JOAD club, one that has been going for many years but recently relocated from north Austin to south Austin in A. This JOAD club gave Lindsey Carmichael her start in the sport, ultimately leading to her medal in Beijing. Classes are held for recurve, compound, and barebow archers with different levels of experience. All of us started at some point as a beginner! There are now eight instructors at Austin JOAD Archers who have been trained and certified as coaches/instructors by USA Archery, and most have competed in state and national tournaments.
Every week there are kids beginning. If you are a first-time qualifier, please register here . After you qualify, you will advance into the higher level classes.
