Arizona State University (ASU) has officially re-entered competition in the sport of Archery. Archery ceased to be a NCArchival Archery sport at ASU in the early 1990’s due to ASU Athletic Department decisions. Until that point, the program had won more national titles (men's archery 15 times, women's archery 21 times, and mixed archery 20 times) than any other athletic group at ASU while additionally boasting numerous World and Olympic team members and medalists. The Sun Devil Archery Club would like to bring that winning tradition back to the Valley. As such, a few dedicated archers have joined together to form a campus club to promote the sport and its competition. ASU is (as of 2004) the third-largest university in the United States with a student body of 57,543. ASU's main campus is in Tempe, Arizona. Satellite campuses exist in Phoenix (ASU West) and in Mesa (ASU East). A complete curriculum university, with outstanding weather year-round, ASU attracts many National Merit scholars (173 in the 2003 freshman class). Many are part of the Barrett Honors College, which produces nationally recognized students, including 54 Fulbright scholars, 28 Goldwater scholars, and 13 Truman scholars. ASU is becoming a major center for research. Under the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education ASU is classified as a Doctoral/Research University–Extensive; under the previous Carnegie classification, it was considered a Research I University. The Sun Devil Archery Club is proud of its competitive team, but the group also incorporates recreational and JOAD training into its program. All students, faculty and staff all welcome to join the activities. Beginner equipment can be furnished to those who otherwise would not have access. Founded in 1978, the Archery Club is one of the oldest sports clubs at Case. They are devoted to making archery accessible to students, faculty and staff. Members include beginners who have never shot before joining, skilled competitors, and shooters who simply find archery to be relaxing and enjoyable. Beginners can learn from their experienced archers, coaches, and advisor. They may also use club equipment while learning to shoot and deciding if archery is for them. They have historically competed at the state and national levels. In addition the club hosts an annual invitational tournament in November, the Caskey Classic. The Case team usually travels to state and regional tournaments, such as the National Indoor Championships, the north region venue of which has been held at Michigan State University for the last several years. Sometimes the club travels further to compete, such as to the United States Intercollegiate Archery Championships which rotate to different venues around the country. Indoor Range is Adelbert Gym Basement, hours are Monday through Friday 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm.

The Purdue Archery Club was reinstated Spring semester of 2008. Through months of work, the club is up and running for all students and staff. We are a competitive archery club that focuses on recurve and compound divisions. We primarily focus on NArchival Archery and NFAA style shooting, but can accommodate almost all types of competitive shooting. Not only do we allow a place for archers to practice, we teach archery to any Purdue student/staff member that wishes to learn. We supply all the equipment and certified coaching. What we use to teach archery is beginner/intermediate recurve bows equipped with sights, arrows, rests, quivers, tabs, and arm guards. The Purdue Archery Club will assist you with any of your archery needs whether you are learning for the first time, training for hunting season, or getting ready for the national championships. We are a club that has recurve, compound, traditional and alternative shooters - some of whom compete at local and national levels. The club continues to grow each year so we're excited to get the word out. UNH is a relatively small (12,000 undergrad) college located in beautiful seacoast NH, a typical New England college that is about an hour away from Boston. UNH has a great reputation for academics in the Life Sciences and Engineering, along with fine programs in Arts, Agriculture and Business. Located near forest, lakes, marshes and oceanfront, there are always hands-on opportunities for students to learn. Our archery program, started in 1996, has been growing stronger each year. Last year, we had over 30 dues-paying members, a good portion of which compete in indoor and outdoor competions. We are coached by Mark Olson, a level 4 coach, and two assistant coaches who facilitate practices that meet twice a week during the school year. Our practice area is indoors and can accommodate up to 30 meters in distance, and we are able to practice year round. In the spring and summers we are able to hold outdoor practices and get up to 90 meters. For the past three years, we've sent archers to the NArchival Archery Indoor Nationals, and they have been ranked among the top collegiate archers in the country. Each year the club also hosts a unique 30 meter indoor competition in mid-March. This "Cabin Fever" shoot has a fun atmosphere for archers who are itching to start shooting outdoors again, but are kept indoors by winter weather. Our website is http://www.unh.edu/archery-club Coach Contact Carla Jean Companion Current club president (Sarah Duncan) Our mailing address is : UNH Archery Club Hamel Recreation Center 128 Main St. Durham, NH 03824. Every year in March we hold an indoor 30 Meter "Cabin Fever" shoot open to all archers of any division, age, or style. It is a fun and truly unique shoot that all are invited to. Check out our website for more info. Thank you very much and happy shooting,

(link to article on Jeon) Website URL NArchival Archery Scholarships - The NArchival Archery funds and manages eight scholarships for full-time college students active in the sport. The value of each scholarship is $500 The NArchival Archery has information on scholarships at this link .WHAT IF YOUR DESIRED COLLEGE DOESN'T SUPPORT ARCHERY? ALL IS NOT LOST!Paraphrasing a well known archer and coach: "Archery, as a sport, will not grow and reach its full potential until our JOAD and High School kids have a place to go post-high school. Also, scholarships would encourage more participation. We all, archers, coaches, students, and even the NAA, have recognize this and begin to market the sport to Colleges and Universities and get them to establish Archery teams, tournaments etc. Golf was able to do it, and there are now golf teams at many, many colleges and universities and many enjoy financial support and varsity status. Archery should be able to do likewise. Some other well-known archery people in Arizona have had direct experience with trying to persuade an institute of higher learning there to create a varsity archery program. Their experience provided them and now us with a very clear message: The movement to create an archery program must be instigated, and driven, by the students and prospective students. It cannot come from only the outside archery community (who must be willing to support the students' actions) - it is the students that count most when a school is being asked to come up with money and resources. It is not so much a "build it and they will come" as it is a "show the need and they might agree". Bottom Line: Archery need not be something that you have to give up when you go to college. There are many arguments that can be made in a rational and logical manner. For example, there are literally thousands of middle and high school students in state programs, such as in Kentucky, who will be able to bring archery to the discussion when deciding on a university or college. After all, remember these institutions WANT to be attractive to prospective students. If archery is perceived by them to be as big of a selling point as say, lacrosse, golf, field hocky, swimming, and the like, then it becomes an easy decision to weigh the small costs of establishing a club or even a varsity program of archery against these other sports already in existance. In the case of A A&M's women's varsity program, the students are working within the system to convince the administration that the 0.7% of the athletic budget that the women get is worth the cost, given that they brought home 4 national championships in four years, maintain one of the highest team GPAs of the entire athletic department, and have provided A&M with great publicity. And be mindful of the opposing viewpoint! Another important step will be persuading the NCArchival Archery that archery at the collegiate level is indeed a viable sport. More than one college club officer made this point - the NArchival Archery and archers in general must push the NCArchival Archery towards recognizing the wave of archery that is coming. With Kentucky, West Virginia, and all the other states that have allowed archery in the schools (more than 1 million kids have gotten bow into hand through NASP) starting the move, it must not be allowed to die on the beach of indifference and ignorance. To that goal, archery must become more common in colleges and university. When you leave high school and go to college, take your bow with you!!! Back to TOP
